A Manifesto for Atheists - Ten Virtues for the Modern...

pill-lip:

A Manifesto for Atheists - Ten Virtues for the Modern Age:

Resilience. Keeping going even when things are looking dark; accepting that reversals are normal; remembering that human nature is, in the end, tough. Not frightening others with your fears.

Empathy. The capacity to connect imaginatively with the sufferings and unique experiences of another person. The courage to become someone else and look back at yourself with honesty.

Patience. We lose our temper because we believe that things should be perfect. We’ve grown so good in some areas (putting men on the moon etc.), we’re ever less able to deal with things that still insist on going wrong; like traffic, government, other people… We should grow calmer and more forgiving by getting more realistic about how things actually tend to go.

Sacrifice. We’re hardwired to seek our own advantage but also have a miraculous ability, very occasionally, to forego our own satisfactions in the name of someone or something else. We won’t ever manage to raise a family, love someone else or save the planet if we don’t keep up with the art of sacrifice.

Politeness. Politeness has a bad name. We often assume it’s about being ‘fake’ (which is meant to be bad) as opposed to ‘really ourselves’ (which is meant to be good). However, given what we’re really like deep down, we should spare others too much exposure to our deeper selves. We need to learn manners, which aren’t evil - they are the necessary internal rules of civilisation. Politeness is very linked to tolerance, the capacity to live alongside people whom one will never agree with, but at the same time, can’t avoid.

Humour. Seeing the funny sides of situations and of oneself doesn’t sound very serious, but it is integral to wisdom, because it’s a sign that one is able to put a benevolent finger on the gap between what we want to happen and what life can actually provide; what we dream of being and what we actually are, what we hope other people will be like and what they are actually like. Like anger, humour springs from disappointment, but it’s disappointment optimally channelled. It’s one of the best things we can do with our sadness.

Self-awareness. To know oneself is to try not to blame others for one’s troubles and moods; to have a sense of what’s going on inside oneself, and what actually belongs to the world.

Forgiveness. Forgiveness means a long memory of all the times when we wouldn’t have got through life without someone cutting us some slack. It’s recognising that living with others isn’t possible without excusing errors.

Hope. The way the world is now is only a pale shadow of what it could one day be. We’re still only at the beginning of history. As you get older, despair becomes far easier, almost reflex (whereas in adolescence, it was still cool and adventurous). Pessimism isn’t necessarily deep, nor optimism shallow.

Confidence. The greatest projects and schemes die for no grander reasons than that we don’t dare. Confidence isn’t arrogance, it’s based on a constant awareness of how short life is and how little we ultimately lose from risking everything.

I’m not gonna be young forever. WE’RE not gonna be young forever. So whatever we want to do, we should strive and be determined to go for it, and not be afraid to be judged by our peers.
When Hair Meets Music

Right now i’m thinking about how the idea of hair and music can be marketed successfully together. I want to create a designed manifesto for the business or the overall thesis project. I think it should explain the voice and what the Loc Box stands for. Its about combining two thing and creating a new experience for the customer. This manifesto will make the process easier. As I was thinking of the idea I came about a few manifesto posters by Paul Robson was inspired by the style of them and what each one said.

The place between the personal and the general is a wasteland. It is the dowry of the stillborn collective consciousness. It is an encrypted drive where we put things that “aren’t quite” or feel “too much.” You go through this place on your way in and out of dreaming and when you let infomercials play for the sake of it. It is when you read a diary entry written one hundred years before you’ve come to it and remember warm flesh sweating and breathing and sensing though you’ve never known that body. The Uncanny is a wasteland because it is useless. It’s the drawer in your room where you throw things you “might need later” but never find a use for until you’ve discarded them. We all remember things that haven’t happened yet and recognize what we’ve never seen. A vibe, a sense of something, a fleeting spark of lightning, dull and drowned in your blood; it is a will-o-the-wisp. It is a memory of forgetting. To collect these instances, these personal photographs created by strangers, is to pursue an object in free-fall, to follow it over a precipice, never out of sight but eternally ungraspable.

What is Uncanny to me is what I have never seen but immediately recognize, as well as what I know I have seen but do not know at all. So many images and small threads of ideas, lost from their spool. Little traces and leads and cuttings, like artifacts from a place that does not exist and cannot. They remind me that the world is not enough for us; that there is both absurdity and beauty, and not one without the other. The Uncanny exists because the human mind has outgrown its environment. It is a comfort and a reason to exist, this pursuit of the Uncanny. In an existential crisis, a dark night of the soul, an unexpected end of the world during a train ride, the Uncanny is a menacing shadow offering an affectionate hand. It wipes your brow and gives you slightly bitter tea. It says, “the world is not enough, the world lacks sense, and you can imagine what has never existed.” The other shadows that live inside those words can be frightening, but they can be empowering as well. How can we possibly imagine things the world does not contain? If there were a reason, an equation to creation that our minds could grasp, some master of creation in our image, it would be dull. It would be enough. If there is enough, there is no reason to go further. The dual attraction and repulsion from experiencing the Uncanny are the same as facing freedom. If you stray too far into it, you will lose shared reality (society) and exist in your own. If you ignore it entirely, there will only be the world, there will only be chemical reaction to stimuli, instincts based on millions of years of thriving to exist before ever being capable of questioning it.

I have been collecting for the Uncanny all of my life, filling my drawer-then dresser-then cupboard-now palace and often spilling out it’s contents to peer over my horde. If neglected, I fear I will have existed for nothing, that I wasted life, that I never felt anything or connected with any other person. It will have become a ghostly Xanadu, filled with things I don’t own but which have my name on them. I know for certain that what inspires the sense of the Uncanny in me is important, though I can logically prove it is not. It is the only faith I am capable of. I love it, I am addicted to it, and so deeply attached as to become anxious about forgetting. I am anxious about forgetting anything, because it is too beautiful. My motivation comes from my desire to make the Uncanny useful, by using it to connect with others, and to make the world more interesting, more beautiful, more strange and more subtle. The only way to make it useful is to create from it. I want to take these relics and impressions and echoes from these worlds like ours and in ours and of ours but not ours. I want to create the environments they came from for others to recognize or not recognize at all. Both are good. Both are interesting. Someday, the purpose of my life will be to not only create them but to populate them. My interest is in atmosphere and form and empathy and fear, not merely fantasy. I want to create stories in the realm of the Uncanny. I want to create things about drawing with water, about mood boarding and smoke signals and junk drawers. Fleeting, but fascinating. Ethereal and pedestrian at the same time. Stories that work with holes and unseen action and shadows with bitter tea, so that for a moment, through experiencing them, you will have visited the wasteland. I will help you escape by reminding you. The Uncanny exists because humanity has outgrown its environment, and in finding it, I find my spirit.

The Grand Junction is about transparency. The exterior of the building expresses the activities within while respecting the industrial setting. The Playhouse and Hulme have undergone major downfalls and changes in the past. Its inhabitants have mostly lived in poor conditions, cramped in social housing, starving for light and space, plagued by crime and antisocial behavior Recent developments in the area have introduced a more balanced and safe society but it still lacks the soundness of a strong community. Therefore the Playhouse abandons its nondescript appearance and the Grand Junction reinstates itself as a performance space where community can gather and strengthen its bonds. Using translucent materials, light/shadow play and projections on the facade of the Playhouse, The Grand Junction dissolves the border between interior and exterior, celebrates performing arts and invites everyone to take part. The Grand Junction is the glowing core of Hulme.

The Subvertisers Manifesto by Daniel Stansfield

This is my manifesto in a poetic contrasting format which depicts the usage of controversy and humour to employ a more subtle and charismatic attitude towards persuasion. I believe the rhythm between words aids fluidity and provides a sense of fluctuation in comparison to other manifesto’s i’ve researched.

I AM THE MEDIA.

manifestoofthephoenix:

There are psychologist who should I do anything they can Convene as “crazy” call what I write here ”incoherent and rambling” I hear them and address them first and foremost. The Incoherent Rambler is YOU. That is NOT projection. See I know Who you are. I know what you do. I know your JOB is to passify the public and to manage their perspective. So you best be careful they never find what I have to say here. Yes. This Manifesto is directed at the MEDIA itself.

Where is my Evidence of Psychological management?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4396351.stm

http://www.iwar.org.uk/psyops/

http://www.dtic.mil/doctrine/new_pubs/

Will you DARE Link to MY Manifesto as I begin to EXPOSE that the TRUE Sociopath is YOU?

Kohlberg wrote about Stages of Moral Development and as best as I can tell you are At level 4 at best-That the law IS god and the Law is ALWAYS right Laws are valid only insofar as they are grounded in justice, and a commitment to justice carries with it an obligation to disobey unjust laws. Our nation is RIDDLED with unjust laws.

http://faculty.plts.edu/gpence/html/kohlberg.htm

Ethics? To which you have abandoned?

So this my Manifesto. I am the counter Media. What I do is to show everything I can find that you Leave OUT of your reports. If you demonize the black bloc as a bunch of violent rebels I will provide cover and show their side of the tale. Why did they turn Violent? I will be everything you are Not. Unbiased, Fair, and slanted (because this nation HAS no moral standing. Nor do many of the nations around the world at ALL. The only way to DEAL with your bias is to SHOW THE OPPOSITE point of view)

I will not be controlled by the Overton Window. I will not be controlled by the range of limited debate within this country.

there can be NO JUSTICE where laws are absolute. When the laws THEMSELVES become corrupt it is not just the right but the DUTY of those who realize it to speak out and BREAK those laws. When the laws Shield the corrupt it becomes the DUTY of those effected to EXPOSE the corruption. MORALITY? I’m the sociopath? Nah. I’m the MASTER. I have MORE of a conscious than these Psychologist. Morality TRANSCENDS the LAW.

Dorner’s manifesto has been dismissed as “rambling” and “incoherent” by most major news outlets, who ignore the fact that it’s actually an articulate and thorough denunciation of police brutality, written by a whistle blower with a demand for stricter gun laws. As Rania Khalek observes, “He points out that his rampage wouldn’t have been possible had there been a “well regulated AWB [assault weapons ban]”. He asks why anyone would need a “30 round magazine for hunting” or an AR15 rifle, which he compares to the M-4 and M-16 military rifles used against ‘Al-Qaeda, Taliban and every combatant since the Vietnam war.”

Do you know what I have to say to this? Counting bodies like sheep to the rhythm of the war drum. Your job is to passify the public. Mine? to agitate them.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=giaZnIr-faM

Everything is NOT ok. Get your Guns, don’t just get near the window, be prepared to Fight when they come for your houses.

Wake up. Turn off the TV, break it to pieces. You don’t need to get your news from the corportist anymore. Everything is not ok. Truth is not a poison Devil. Lies are. Lies your teachers and your Media sold you.

Dorner was a SANE person who was DRIVEN insane by the system and they have to frame him as Rambling and incoherent so that the “civilized world” can feel like “Everything is ok” BUT SHIT IS NOT OK. If your MEdia EVER tells you “incoherent and Rambling” you can BET MONEY the truth is the INVERSE.

I won’t trade humanity for Patriotism.

Dorner was exposing TRUE injustice

http://www.counterpunch.org/2013/02/11/lapd-chickens-come-home-to-roost/#.URtkgGLGBfY.facebook

““My first experience of the LAPD was as a child back in Wales, staring at the TV screen in horror and fascination, watching a grainy image of police officers beat a black man to a pulp. I’d never seen anything like it. None of us had. Six thousand miles away, in a tiny village in Wales with only five hundred inhabitants, we talked about Rodney King and racism in Los Angeles . T-shirts sprang up on local market stalls bearing the slogan LAPD – treat you like a King! Los Angeles seemed like a place of horrors, a place so utterly backward and corrupt that none of us would ever want to even visit, let alone live there. I never thought of Los Angeles as the home of the movie industry. I thought of Los Angeles as the home of racism, police brutality, and Skid Row.

And then I moved to Los Angeles in my twenties, and I became exposed to a different kind of policing. I became exposed to the LAPD. While reporting on Occupy LA‘s raid night, I watched cops beat peaceful activists with batons in a quiet side street. I wrote about it, and Mayor Villaraigosa called me a liar on CNN. While protesting outside a downtown jail, a friend of mine was physically assaulted by a Police Officer. Despite video evidence to the contrary, he was accused of felony resisting and encouraged to take a plea deal. He is now on probation for being assaulted by a Police Officer. I regularly saw homeless people on Skid Row harassed by police, arrested for sitting on the sidewalk, their belongings confiscated and never returned. As a white, British woman, I did not ever experience the same levels of abuse, oppression and harassment that I saw exacted upon people of color, the homeless, the mentally ill and other vulnerable, marginalized groups. But working as a community organizer and activist in Downtown LA and Skid Row made me realize that the Rodney King incident and the days of Rampart weren’t a part of history. They were part of the present. It is how the Los Angeles Police Department still operates today.”

http://mxgm.org/report-on-the-extrajudicial-killings-of-120-black-people/

“Abdul Arian ran from the LAPD. Somehow, in the double-speak for the department, running away is aggression, contrary to what every normal person knows to be true — that running away is almost the least aggressive thing one can do. Abdul was 19, the LAPD emptied out 90 shots to bring down an unarmed teenager on foot who was running for his life.”

http://articles.latimes.com/2011/mar/05/local/la-me-shooting-20110305

“It’s interesting that America does not want to understand why our serial killers and our gunmen do what they do. After every tragedy, newspaper articles ask “Why”, and yet now, when we have an alleged killer who has answered the “Why” for us, we dismiss his explanation, replacing it with our own: He is simply crazy. We want to believe killers are ‘crazy’, a catch all word where we consign everyone who enacts violence which has not been sanctioned by the government to the realm of the mentally ill, and revere those who enact violence in the name of the state as good, law abiding citizens who deserve the power to decide who lives and who dies.”

America Deserves the truth-wither it wants to hear it or not

So this is the truth:

“Everything that the establishment has told you is wrong with you- is actually what’s right with you.

You see things others don’t. You are hardwired to change the world. Unlike 9 out of 10 people - your mind is irrepressable - and this threatens authority. You were born to be a revolutionary.

You can’t stand rules because in your heart you know there’s a better way.

You have strengths dangerous to the establishment - and it wants them eliminated, So your whole life you’ve been told your strengths were weaknesses - Now I’m telling you otherwise.

Your impulsivity is a gift - impulses are your key to the miraculous,

Your distractibility - is an artifact of your inspired creativity,

Your mood swings - reflect the natural pulse of life, they give you unstoppable energy when you’re high and deep soulful insight when you’re low,

Been diagnosed with a “disorder”? That’s society’s latest way to deny it’s own illness by pointing the finger at you. Your addictive personality is just a symptom of your vast underused capacity for heroic, creative expression and spiritual connection. your utter lack of repression, your wide eyed idealism, your unmitigated open mind - didn’t anyone ever tell you?! these are the traits shared by the greatest pioneers and visionaries and innovators, revolutionaries, procrastinators and drama queens, activists on the social scene, space cadets and mavericks, philosophers and derelicts, business suits flying fighter jets, football stars and sex addicts, celebrities with ADD, alcoholics who seek novelty, first responders - prophets and saints, mystics and change agents.”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPR3GlpQQJA

fascism is alive and well in America.

WAKE UP!

http://stopthedrugwar.org/chronicle/2013/feb/13/weeks_corrupt_cops_stories

and the LAPD is NOT the only problem

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Serpico

It’s STILL Going on. Still.

http://www.theepochtimes.com/n2/opinion/the-blue-wall-cracks-nypd-officers-approve-corruption-63674.html

I’m More Scared of the Cops Than I Am of Christopher Dorner

I AM THE MEDIA: and I Will NOT respect ANY gag order given to me.

I will teach the kids how the laws are ILLUSIONS by showing them the SILKROAD and BLACK MARKET RELOADED and HOW TO DESTROY BANKS

I will leak information DANGEROUS to the FALSE order.

Inspired by the Agile Manifesto (http://agilemanifesto.org/), an adapted version for Corporate and Youth Training.

We come to realize that the traditional ways of delivering training are obsolete for the 21st century. We have come to observe that we should value:

I will not concentrate on what anyone else is doing, or how anyone else chooses to go about the process of healing and moving on. I will do it in my way. And my way is this:
- I will stop talking about my past relationships, my regrets, and my fears. Other than when I approach the subject with my new therapist next week, I am finished rehashing these feelings.
- On the other side of that coin, I will talk to someone when I am feeling sad, alone, or vulnerable. I will take comfort in my usual self-care routines: Grey’s Anatomy, the pop-punk music I liked in middle school, and long, hot showers. I will not begrudge myself the time it takes to get back on track because it “isn’t productive;” I will value that time as something important to my bodily and spiritual wellbeing.
- I will treat myself well. I will feed my body what it needs, I will wash my face every day, I will brush my teeth and moisturize and get enough sleep. I will deep-condition my hair once a week. I will exercise. I will constantly take stock of how my body is feeling and what I can do to make it feel better.
- I will participate. I will work hard in my co-op, take more shifts as a rape crisis advocate, and apply to be a tutor. I will apply for this competitive internship. I will seek out new spaces to occupy in the world.
- I will remember that my college is not the real world, and I will remember not to take myself too seriously. I am only nineteen years old, and i am surrounded by 18-24 year olds. We are not average society, we are not yet leaders, and we have a lot to learn. - That being said, I will remember that school is important. I will take my classes seriously and I will make an effort to get to know my classmates and professors. I will draft essays at least twice before I submit them. I will do as much reading as humanly possible (and I will forgive myself if some things slip through the cracks).
- I will enjoy time with friends. I will accept offers and invitations, even when I am on the brink of saying no. When I am decidedly uncomfortable with seeing people, I will forgive myself and spend some time doing things for me—painting my nails, washing my hair, or reading for pleasure. - I will remember that I am capable of love, I am NOT broken or irreparably damaged, and I will grow into a person who will look back on this part of my life as an important period of evolution and increased self-awareness. I love myself, I respect myself, and from now on, I do things for ME, MY community, and the people who care about ME.”

- I Am Talking To Myself: Self Love: A Promise (via mikkipedia)

"Life is short too short to be worrying about whether your hair looks perfect or if you have time to..."

“Life is short too short to be worrying about whether your hair looks perfect or if you have time to watch another TV show. Life is about finding your inner happiness and following God with your everything. We aren’t promised tomorrow so why are you sitting around doing nothing today? God has you here on the earth for a purpose. So find out what that purpose is! LIVE IN HAPPINESS. The key to success is to listen to God. You can do anything in this world if you really put your mind to it. If you want to be a millionaire and own a hundred mustang convertibles you could. Or if you want to go help the starving children in third world countries and teach them about our savior, you could. TRAVEL. Become the amazing person you never thought you could become. Treat everyone with respect and kindness for we are not promised tomorrow. Stop wasting your time judging people. All you are doing is judging yourself in return. Do what makes you happy. Success isn’t determined by how much money you have, or how many cars are in your driveway. It’s determined by how you lived your life. Do you want to be remembered as the grumpy girl that didn’t want to do anything but sit around and mope all day? No? THEN CHANGE. Change is the key word in any situation. Everything around us is constantly changing. Live your life for God and start seeing things and people through a different prospective. I assure you your views on life will soon change.”

- Beautifully Fearless: My Manifesto.

dyingforbadmusic:

Marina Abramović. An artist’s life Manifesto

1. An artist’s conduct in his life:

An artist should not lie to himself or others

An artist should not steal ideas from other artists

An artist should not compromise for themselves or in regards to the art market

An artist should not kill other human beings

An artist should not make themselves into an idol

An artist should not make themselves into an idol

An artist should not make themselves into an idol

2. An artist’s relation to his love life:

An artist should avoid falling in love with another artist

An artist should avoid falling in love with another artist

An artist should avoid falling in love with another artist

3. An artist’s relation to the erotic:

An artist should develop an erotic point of view on the world

An artist should be erotic

An artist should be erotic

An artist should be erotic

4. An artist’s relation to suffering:

An artist should suffer

From the suffering comes the best work

Suffering brings transformation

Through the suffering an artist transcends their spirit

Through the suffering an artist transcends their spirit

Through the suffering an artist transcends their spirit

5. An artist’s relation to depression:

An artist should not be depressed

Depression is a disease and should be cured

Depression is not productive for an artist

Depression is not productive for an artist

Depression is not productive for an artist

6. An artist’s relation to suicide:

Suicide is a crime against life

An artist should not commit suicide

An artist should not commit suicide

An artist should not commit suicide

7. An artist’s relation to inspiration:

An artist should look deep inside themselves for inspiration

The deeper they look inside themselves, the more universal they become

The artist is universe

The artist is universe

The artist is universe

8. An artist’s relation to self-control:

The artist should not have self-c ontrol about his life

The artist should have total self-control about his work

The artist should not have self-control about his life

The artist should have total self-control about his work

9. An artist’s relation with transparency:

The artist should give and receive at the same time

Transparency means receptive

Transparency means to give

Transparency means to receive

Transparency means receptive

Transparency means to give

Transparency means to receive

Transparency means receptive

Transparency means to give

Transparency means to receive

10. An artist’s relation to symbols:

An artist creates his own symbols

Symbols are an artist’s language

The language must then be translated

Sometimes it is difficult to find the key

Sometimes it is difficult to find the key

Sometimes it is difficult to find the key

11. An artist’s relation to silence:

An artist has to understand silence

An artist has to create a space for silence to enter his work

Silence is like an island in the middle of a turbulent ocean

Silence is like an island in the middle of a turbulent ocean

Silence is like an island in the middle of a turbulent ocean

12. An artist’s relation to solitude:

An artist must make time for the long periods of solitude

Solitude is extremely important

Away from home

Away from the studio

Away from family

Away from friends

An artist should stay for long periods of time at waterfalls

An artist should stay for long periods of time at exploding volcanoes

An artist should stay for long periods of time looking at the fast running rivers

An artist should stay for long periods of time looking at the horizon where the ocean and sky meet

An artist should stay for long periods of time looking at the stars in the night sky

13. An artist’s conduct in relation to work:

An artist should avoid going to the studio every day

An artist should not treat his work schedule as a bank employee does

An artist should explore life and work only when an idea comes to him in a dream or during the day as a vision that arises as a surprise

An artist should not repeat himself

An artist should not overproduce

An artist should avoid his own art pollution

An artist should avoid his own art pollution

An artist should avoid his own art pollution

14. An artist’s possessions:

Buddhist monks advise that it is best to have nine possessions in their life: 1 robe for the summer
1 robe for the winter
1 pair of shoes
1 begging bowl for food
1 mosquito net
1 prayer book
1 umbrella
1 mat to sleep on
1 pair of glasses if needed

An artist should decide for himself the minimum personal possessions they should have

An artist should have more and more of less and less

An artist should have more and more of less and less

An artist should have more and more of less and less

15. A list of an artist’s friends:

An artist should have friends that lift their spirits

An artist should have friends that lift their spirits

An artist should have friends that lift their spirits

16. A list of an artist’s enemies:

Enemies are very important

The Dalai Lama has said that it is easy to have compassion with friends but much more difficult to have compassion with enemies

An artist has to learn to forgive

An artist has to learn to forgive

An artist has to learn to forgive

17. Different death scenarios:

An artist has to be aware of his own mortality

For an artist, it is not only important how he lives his life but also how he dies

An artist should look at the symbols of his work for the signs of different death scenarios

An artist should die consciously without fear

An artist should die consciously without fear

An artist should die consciously without fear

18. Different funeral scenarios:

An artist should give instructions before the funeral so that everything is done the way he wants it

The funeral is the artist’s last art piece before leaving

The funeral is the artist’s last art piece before leaving

“I don’t enjoy living in dull and grey cities. Do you? Have you noticed that toys for kids are generally very shiny and colorful? I wonder why that is, given that they are to be brought up to live in mostly dull and gray cities as adults.” Jan Vormann’s Manifesto
